IIT- R was set-up in Roorkee in 1980 and its
Biotechnology department was set up in the year 1986. In 2002 the name
“Department of biotechnology” was organized from the name “Department of
Biosciences and Biotechnology” It’s principal objective is to conduct the
training better te4achning and research programs in the field of modern
bio-technology. In 2005, institute started M.S.C biotechnology course which is
being funded by department of Bio-technology Govt of India. IIT –R
biotechnology offers three diverse courses 1) bachelor of technology 2) Master
of science and 3) doctor of philosophy. All the seat allotments in IIT-R is
purely based on merit, there should be a negotiable preference for the students
who came from backward casts. For undergraduate course the score of the exam
“Joint Entrance Examination (JEE)” is mandatory. Post graduate/ master degree
course admission is managed through (All India) level GATE (Graduate Aptitude
Test in Engineering) exam which is conducted by seven Indian Institute of
technology and IISc Bangalore on behalf of national co-coordinating board and
ministry of human resource development (MHRD) govt; of India.
