The National Institute of Science Education and Research(NISER)is a research institution in Jatani (Khordha) Odisha, India. The Prime Minister of India laid the foundation stone on August 28, 2006, establishing the institute along the lines of the IISc in Bangalore, and its seven sister institutions, the IISERs, established at Pune, Mohali, Kolkata, Bhopal, Brahmapur, Tirupati and Thiruvananthapuram in India.
Unlike the IISERs, which will be governed by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, government of India, NISER operates under the umbrella of the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). The government of India has earmarked an initial outlay of ₹823.19 crore (US$120 million) during the first seven years of this project, starting from September 2007.
The then Indian Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh has stated that NISER will compare with the best institutions in the country in terms of facilities and faculty. This move will help elevate the standard of research and education in Odisha.
On
7 February 2016 the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi dedicated
the institute to the nation. In his address at NISER, he had called to
make NISER the greenest academic campus in the country.try.
Academics At NISER
The
National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER) is
dedicated to graduate education and research only. It offers a five-year
integrated M.Sc. as well as Ph.D. degrees in pure and applied sciences.
Those performing well in M.Sc. have a chance to be absorbed in R & D
units and autonomous research institutions of the Department of Atomic
Energy.
NISER is in the process of starting an Integrated post-B.Sc PhD programme.
Academic programmes
NEST
The
National Entrance Screening Test or NEST is a compulsory test for
admission to the 5-year Integrated MSc programme in basic sciences -
Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics - at National Institute of
Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar and University of
Mumbai - Department of Atomic Energy Center for Excellence in Basic
Sciences (UM-DAE CBS), Mumbai. Both NISER and CBS are autonomous
institutions established by the Department of Atomic Energy, government
of India, in 2007.

Integrated MSc Program
Students
get selected for integrated M.Sc. programs through a competitive annual
examination, the National Entrance Screening Test (NEST). The first
batch was admitted in September 2007. From 45,000 applicants nationwide
in 2015, 100 were qualified for admission.
Curriculum
To
broaden the intellectual horizon of the students, there are compulsory
liberal arts courses drawing from Humanities and Social Sciences areas
such as; Technical Communication, Sociology, Economics, Psychology,
Philosophy, etc. Each of the undergraduate students carries out research
projects that last more than a year. The training makes them ready to
embark on a research career by the time they graduate from NISER.
Scholarships
NISER
has been included in the list of a selected few institutions where
students directly qualify to receive a scholarship under the Scholarship
for Higher Education (SHE) category of the INSPIRE(Innovation in
Science Pursuit for Inspired Research)[12] programme launched by Department of Science & Technology, Government of India.
All admitted students receive a scholarship of ₹5,000 (US$74)
per month which should be sufficient to meet the course fees and
boarding costs. Students also receive a contingency grant of ₹20,000 (US$300) per year to facilitate their academic pursuits.[13] [14]
PhD Program
In
2010 January, NISER started offering a Doctoral Programme under the
guidance of faculty members of NISER to students with a Master degree in
basic sciences, e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. To
get admission, students have to qualify the - NET(CSIR/UGC)/GATE/ NBHM
or equivalent examination valid for the current year in the relevant
area of research.

Annual festival
The
students of NISER hold an annual cultural festival called Udbhava,
usually in the months of September/October. Many activities like fashion
show, Abhivyakti a street dance competition where some of the best
dancer and dancing group take part from all over Odisha, General Quiz
show, debates and discussion on current issues are held.

NEST 2017 Application Form
- Candidates can fill and submit the NEST 2017 Application Form only via online mode.
- The application form for this exam is not be available through offline mode.
- The application form is available from the 2nd January 2017 till 6th March 2017.
- Candidates have to fill the application form with all details and upload the scanned images along with.
- The filled application form will be submitted by online only.
- The application fee is Rs.700/- (for male candidates of General/OBC category) and Rs. 350/- (for SC/ST/PD and all female candidates).
- The fee payment can be done through debit/credit card, net banking or through demand draft of any bank drawn on the favor of NISER-NEST and payable at Bhubaneswar.

NEST Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility for NEST 2017 is mentioned below:
Age limit:
- Candidates born on or after 1 August, 1997 (for general and OBC candidates) are eligible to apply.
- The relaxation of five years in age limit is given for SC, ST and PD (Physically Disable) candidates.
Education qualification:
- Candidates must have passed 12th or equivalent exam with any combination of Physics/ Chemistry/ Mathematics/ Biology subjects.
- Candidates must have passed 12th or equivalent exam in 2015 or 2016 are eligible to apply.
- Candidates who have passed 12th or equivalent exam before 2015 are not eligible to apply.
- Candidates appearing in 12th or equivalent exam are also eligible to apply.
- For admission in M.Sc programme, candidates must secure minimum 60% (for general & OBC candidates) and 55% (for SC, ST and PD candidates) in the 12th or equivalent exam.
- Candidates should secure a position in NEST merit list.
Exam Pattern
- Sections: The examination paper will be divided into five sections which consist general section of 30 marks & four subject sections of 50 marks each.
- Subjects: The five sections are General aptitude, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.
- Section one will be compulsory for all while section 2 to 5 was from subjects as physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics.
- Candidates can choose any section.
- Merit Calculation: Only three highest scored sections was considered for merit calculation.
- Language: The mode of language will be English only.
- Type: The question paper will contain objective type questions.
- Negative Marking: Negative marking will be done for subjects section only. No negative marking in general section.
- Pattern: The question paper will be asked in OMR pattern.
- Marks: The question paper will contain total 230 marks.

Seat Reservation
There are around 172 seats are
available in NISER and 47 seats available in CBS for integrated M.Sc

NEST Syllabus
The NEST Syllabus will be followed by the pattern of CBSE/NCERT science syllabus of class 11th and 12th. The syllabus will comprises of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics subjects.
There is not any fixed syllabus for general section. In general
section, question will be related to the major historical milestones in
physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, astronomy, environment and
computer science.
Preparation Tips:
First
of all plan your study preparations. Prepare a time-table and divide
time equally for all the subjects. Candidates should prepare for the
exam according to the syllabus. Include the best preparation books and
previous years question papers in your study material. Note down
difficult topics and discuss them with your teachers and classmates.
NEST 2017 Admit Card
The NEST 2017 Admit Card will be available from the 14th April 2017.
The admit card can be download through the official site of NEST. The
admit card will not be sent by post to any candidate. It is mandatory to
bring the admit card and Identity card at the examination venue.
Candidates are advised to keep the admit card safe till the admission
procedure.
NEST 2018
NEST
2018 (National Entrance Screening Test) is a national level entrance
test. It is organized for admission to the 5 years of integrated M.Sc
programmes at NISER & UM-DAE CEBS. The authority will issue the
application form through online mode from the 1st week of January 2018.
NEST 2017 Result
The NEST 2017 Result will be provided to students through the official portal of NEST. The result will be declared on 16th June 2017.
A merit list will be prepared on the basis of marks scored in NEST
exam. For merit list preparation, score of general section along with
scores of top three sections from the subjects will be considered.
Students will be called for further NEST Counselling 2017 on the basis
of ranks secured by the candidate in the rank list. The merit list will
be posted on the official site of NEST. The admissions will be done
strictly on the basis of merit list till all seats are filled.
